The 2026 Digital Marketing Checklist
27 actions every founder should take across their first 90 days. Three phases, real success metrics, links to the tools and services that actually help.
Most digital marketing checklists are 40 items of "post daily on social" and "run some ads." This one is different. 27 specific actions, sequenced across 90 days, that founders consistently skip and regret later. Every action has a defined success metric and links to the service (Flawless or otherwise) that helps you execute it.
The checklist is built for one specific audience — founders and marketing leads at growing brands somewhere between $500k and $10M ARR who need to build a real digital marketing engine, not another patchwork of channels. If that's you, bookmark this and work through it in order.
Skip actions at your own risk. The founders who succeed at digital marketing don't do more actions than everyone else. They do the same fundamental actions in the right sequence, without cutting corners.
- Foundation — Days 1 to 30 (Actions 1 to 9)
- Growth — Days 31 to 60 (Actions 10 to 18)
- Scale — Days 61 to 90 (Actions 19 to 27)
Phase 1: Foundation (Days 1 to 30)
The first 30 days are not about running ads or publishing content. They're about setting the foundation that decides whether the next 60 days actually produce results. Founders who skip Phase 1 spend the next 12 months fixing what should have been done in month one.
Action 1: Name your single primary growth constraint
Every business has one constraint that matters most right now. Awareness (not enough people know you exist). Conversion (traffic isn't turning into customers). Retention (customers don't come back). Write down which one is yours in one sentence. Every subsequent action depends on this being clear.
Success metric. You can name your primary constraint in under 15 seconds without hedging.
Action 2: Set up conversion tracking properly
GA4 with proper conversion events. Server-side tracking. Offline conversion imports for lead-gen businesses. Enhanced conversions for e-commerce. This is the single most-skipped foundational action, and the reason 60 percent of ad accounts we audit are optimizing toward the wrong signal.
Success metric. You can pull revenue-attributed data by channel for any 7-day window in under 2 minutes.
Action 3: Run a technical SEO audit
Site speed, crawlability, indexation, schema markup, Core Web Vitals, mobile UX, JavaScript rendering. All scored, prioritized, and fixed. This is the invisible layer everything else compounds on. Broken site equals wasted spend on everything else you'll do.
Success metric. Core Web Vitals in green. All key pages have proper schema. No indexation errors in Google Search Console.
Get help. Our technical SEO services handle this end-to-end with priority-graded fix plans.
Action 4: Fully optimize your Google Business Profile
Categories, services, attributes, photos (weekly uploads), posts (weekly cadence), Q&A section, review response templates. Most businesses fill out 40 percent of GBP fields and wonder why they don't rank locally.
Success metric. All eligible GBP fields completed. First page ranking for at least one "[your service] near me" query within 60 days.
Get help. Local SEO services — GBP optimization is at the core.
Action 5: Audit your website conversion rate
What percentage of visitors actually take your desired action? Homepage bounce rate. Form completion rate. Add-to-cart rate. If you don't know these numbers to two decimal places, this is action 5 for a reason.
Success metric. Baseline established for homepage, key landing pages, and checkout/form conversion. One primary optimization hypothesis identified.
Get help. Custom website design services for structural fixes, eCommerce optimization for D2C.
Action 6: Clarify your brand positioning in one sentence
Who you are. Who you're for. What makes you different. If your team can't answer this consistently, no amount of marketing spend will produce coherent results because every campaign will pull in a different direction.
Success metric. Every senior team member can answer "what does Flawless do?" (or your equivalent) with the same core sentence.
Get help. Our branding services build positioning documents your whole team can execute against. See our branding page for the full methodology.
Action 7: Set up your email platform with a welcome flow
Klaviyo for e-commerce, HubSpot for B2B, ActiveCampaign for growing SMBs. Whatever the platform, get a proper welcome sequence live before you start driving traffic. Every visitor without an email capture is a leak in your funnel.
Success metric. Automated 3 to 5 email welcome sequence live. Email capture on all high-traffic pages. Baseline signup rate measured.
Get help. Email marketing services for setup and ongoing management.
Action 8: Audit your competitors' digital presence
Pick 3 to 5 direct competitors. Document their channels, positioning, pricing, content strategy, and where they're weak. This becomes your opportunity map for the next 60 days.
Success metric. One-page competitor comparison document. Three specific gaps you can exploit named clearly.
Action 9: Create a 90-day KPI dashboard
One dashboard, 8 to 12 metrics, reviewed weekly. Include leading indicators (traffic, signup rate, ad CTR) and lagging (revenue, LTV, CAC). Update Fridays. Refuse to add "just one more" metric.
Success metric. Dashboard live in Looker Studio, GA4, or spreadsheet. Weekly review calendar reminder set.
- Your foundational data is trustworthy
- Your site is technically healthy
- Your brand positioning is documented
- Your email capture is working
- Your competitors are mapped
- Your KPIs are tracked weekly
Phase 2: Growth (Days 31 to 60)
With foundation in place, Phase 2 turns on the growth engine. Two channels maximum. Anyone trying to launch 5 channels in month two hasn't understood how compounding works.
Action 10: Launch Google Ads for your one must-win term
Not every keyword you could target. The one term you absolutely must own — the buying-intent phrase your best-fit customer types when they're ready to purchase. Structure as an exact-match campaign with a dedicated landing page.
Success metric. First conversion tracked within 14 days. CPA within 20 percent of target within 30 days.
Get help. Google Ads management for setup and optimization.
Action 11: Build one high-converting landing page
Not a homepage. A dedicated page for your one Google Ads campaign, with one offer, one call-to-action, no navigation menu, one specific target audience. Aim for 5 percent plus conversion rate.
Success metric. Landing page live with proper tracking. Baseline conversion rate measured. First A/B test running by day 45.
Action 12: Publish your first cornerstone content piece
Not a 400-word blog post. A 2,000 to 3,000 word deep piece on the highest-value topic in your niche. This becomes the anchor for your SEO strategy for the next 12 months.
Success metric. One cornerstone piece published, indexed by Google within 7 days, and internally linked from at least 3 pages.
Get help. SEO content writing services for pieces that rank and convert.
Action 13: Set up retargeting
Meta for consumer, LinkedIn for B2B. Retarget site visitors who didn't convert. Simple sequences. Bottom-of-funnel offers. Start small ($500 to $1,000 per month) and scale what works.
Success metric. Retargeting audiences populated. First campaign live. ROAS measured against direct response baselines.
Get help. Facebook advertising for B2C, LinkedIn advertising for B2B.
Action 14: Collect your first 5 case studies or testimonials
Video is best. Written is fine. Screenshots of client Slack messages work too. Social proof is the highest-converting element you can add to any landing page. If you don't have 5 by day 60, you're not asking often enough.
Success metric. 5 approved case studies or testimonials in your content library. Deployed to at least 3 marketing surfaces.
Action 15: Start founder LinkedIn presence (B2B only)
If you're B2B, founder-led LinkedIn is the single highest-ROI activity you can do that doesn't cost money. Post 3 times weekly. Original thought, not link shares. Engage with 10 target accounts daily.
Success metric. 60 posts published (3/week for 8 weeks). 500 plus target-audience followers gained. First inbound demo booked from LinkedIn.
Action 16: Build 3 automated email sequences
Welcome (already done in Action 7). Abandoned browsing/cart. Post-purchase or post-signup nurture. These three flows typically generate 20 to 40 percent of e-commerce email revenue.
Success metric. Three flows live with baseline open, click, and revenue metrics tracked weekly.
Action 17: Land your first 3 relevant podcast appearances or media mentions
Founder credibility building. Domain authority signal for SEO. Content you can repurpose 5 different ways. Pitch 30 podcasts in your niche in month two. Land 3.
Success metric. 3 published podcast episodes or media pieces where you or your brand is featured.
Action 18: Run an AI SEO baseline audit
Where does your brand rank in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for your target queries? Most brands have never checked. This becomes your GEO baseline for the year. Read our practical guide to Generative Engine Optimization for the exact methodology.
Success metric. Citation share measured across 3 AI assistants for 10 target queries. Baseline documented.
Get help. AI SEO services — we run baseline audits as a standalone deliverable.
- Google Ads producing conversions at target CPA
- Landing page baseline conversion measured
- First cornerstone content ranking
- Retargeting recovering lost visitors
- Social proof deployed
- Email flows generating revenue
- Founder LinkedIn building audience (if B2B)
- AI SEO baseline established
Phase 3: Scale (Days 61 to 90)
Phase 3 is about doubling down on what worked, killing what didn't, and adding depth to the channels producing pipeline. This is where the compounding starts.
Action 19: Scale winning ad channels aggressively
If Google Ads is hitting a 4x ROAS, double the budget. Then double it again. Winning channels deserve more budget, not less. Founders lose more money by underinvesting in winners than by overinvesting in losers.
Success metric. Ad spend on best-performing channel increased by 100 to 200 percent while maintaining ROAS within 15 percent of baseline.
Action 20: Add your second content pillar
Publish content pillar number 2 (a second cornerstone piece plus 4 supporting articles). By end of month 3, you should have 2 cornerstone pieces and 8 to 10 supporting articles. This creates topical authority signals for both Google and AI systems.
Success metric. 8 to 12 published pieces linked in a clear topic cluster architecture. First pieces ranking on page 2 or 3 of Google.
Action 21: Launch social media management (if consumer)
For B2C brands with visual differentiation (fashion, beauty, food, lifestyle), month 3 is when to add structured social media management. Instagram + TikTok Reels. 12 to 20 posts monthly with consistent visual identity.
Success metric. Publishing calendar live. First 30 pieces published. Baseline reach, engagement, and website-traffic-from-social measured.
Get help. Social media management services.
Action 22: Run your first CRO test cycle
With traffic baselines from Phase 2, you now have enough data to run real A/B tests. Start with your highest-traffic page and highest-drop-off funnel step. Ship 2 to 4 tests in the next 30 days.
Success metric. First A/B test reached statistical significance. Learnings documented. Second test launched.
Action 23: Expand to your second market
If your first market is working, add a second. New city, new country, new industry vertical. Use everything you've learned in the first 60 days as a playbook.
Success metric. Second market entry plan documented. First test campaign live in new market by end of month 3.
Action 24: Set up a review generation system
Automated post-purchase or post-service review requests. Prompts trigger 3 to 14 days after transaction. Templates for responding to positive and negative reviews. Aim for 20 plus new reviews per quarter minimum.
Success metric. Review request automation live. First 10 new reviews collected. Response templates deployed for both positive and negative feedback.
Action 25: Publish your first data-driven case study
Not a testimonial. A structured case study with specific numbers, methodology, and lessons. This becomes premium content that ranks, converts, and gets cited by AI systems for years.
Success metric. One published case study with specific metrics (before/after, ROI figures, timeline). Deployed on website, LinkedIn, and email.
Action 26: Review agency and team performance
End of month 3 is when you review whether your agency (if you have one) or your in-house team is delivering. Use the framework in our agency evaluation guide. Fire what's not working. Double down on what is.
Success metric. Written performance review completed for each agency, freelancer, or team member. Renewal or termination decisions made explicitly.
Action 27: Plan your next 90 days
Don't just extend Phase 3 forever. Set new goals. Add new channels. Kill what plateaued. The founders who compound over years are the ones who reset their plan every 90 days.
Success metric. Days 91 to 180 plan documented in writing. New primary goal identified. Budget allocation for next quarter set.
- Winning channels scaled to 2x plus of baseline spend
- 10 plus pieces of published cornerstone and supporting content
- CRO cycle producing measurable lifts
- Second market or vertical in test phase
- Review generation automated
- First data-driven case study published
- Next 90 days planned in writing
What most founders get wrong
The number one mistake we see is founders trying to do all 27 actions simultaneously in the first month. This is not how compounding works. Actions 1 to 9 create the base that makes actions 10 to 18 succeed. Skip the base and Phase 2 collapses.
The second mistake is over-investing in "cool" channels (TikTok, podcast production, video content) before nailing the boring foundational ones (tracking, technical SEO, email flows). The boring channels are boring because they work. The cool channels are cool because they're new and unproven.
The third mistake is not reviewing at the end of Phase 3. Founders who never do Action 26 (agency and team review) or Action 27 (next 90 days planning) plateau at whatever they achieved in the first 90 days.
